NY Post: NYPD Park Crackdown
News, New York. Observed by lawandorder on Wed, Jun 18 2008
By BRAD HAMILTON and ANDY GELLER
June 18, 2008 --
The NYPD will conduct a crackdown on illegal parking today - its second in three months.
About 150 cops and several tow trucks will stage a ticketing and towing blitz in lower Manhattan - hauling away automobiles that are parked illegally and those with phony parking placards, a police source said.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly warned motorists against using fake placards in a radio appearance Monday.

NYPD breaks law and endangers school kids
9007 56th Avenue, Queens. Observed by hiyall on Wed, Jun 11 2008
This was intentional law break and perp attempted to conceal identity by placing invalid placard under the vehicle registration sticker to conceal the identifying numbers. Driver was female and came from Queens Center Mall where Macy's is located.
This created blind spot for hours adjacent to school facility and at the merge point of 2 high traffic streets (from mall traffic). It is also the location of a pedestrian injury by auto due in part to blind spots created by autos parked under the "No Parking Anytime" signs posted liberally at this location.
NY State Court Officer parks illegally and places placard then pba card over placard number
9007 56th Avenue, Elmhurst, NY 11373, Queens. Observed by hiyall on Wed, Jun 11 2008
This was an intentional law break. The perp was aware of his/her guilt and attempted to conceal their identity by placing the pba card over the numbers of the placard in a deliberate attempt to cover up their identity.
It is adjacent to High School facility, across from a mall and at the intersection of 2 high volume streets where they merge and was the location of an injury accident to a pedestrian 12/24/2006.
Start Fresh NY illegally parked
432 East 13th st, Manhattan. Observed by lawandorder on Sat, Jun 07 2008
Start Fresh NY, a non-profit (http://www.startfresh.us/), apparently doesn't read the regulations on their DOT parking permit very carefully.
They are parked in a No Standing Anytime except USPS Vehicles zone, and their permit only allows for:
"No Standing Except Trucks Loading and Unloading"
"No Parking Anytime/Specific Hours"
"At Meters"
And only for 3 hours at that.

I hung out for awhile and kept expecting someone to run up and drive away. But there was open curbside parking in front of the car, so I think it must have been parked there for awhile. (Sorry for the poor quality photo; maybe it's time to upgrade my phone.)

Car drivers like this one with Boys Club "permits" frequently park in No Parking Anytime zones, in bike lanes and in front of hydrants here. This one has a photocopied and expired Detectives' Endowment Association card on their "permit" as well.
I have nothing against the Boys Club. It's just that they have no right to park there.

This corner spot is illegal because it crosses the building line to the corner. People always get a ticket for this violation. Today is Monday 5-12-08 and this car has been parked here since at least Friday 5-9-08. It is a student car with school sticker on back windshield and student parking sticker on front windshield. Must be a cop's kid using the placard for their own use.

NY Daily News: Ex-MTA boss keeps placard, gets free parking at train station
News, New York. Observed by lawandorder on Tue, May 06 2008
A wealthy former MTA chairman not only has a police-issued parking permit - but also a no-cost parking spot at a Metro-North station in a tony Westchester village.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority recently slashed the number of dashboard placards issued through the MTA Police Department - but politically connected Virgil Conway, who left the board in 2001, managed to keep the perk, the Daily News has learned.
Conway told The News that he uses the permit to "identify" his car to police at the Bronxville train station, where he is allowed to park in a no-cost, reserved MTA spot.
"It's a courtesy," he said.

This permit authorizes a different vehicle, not this one. Might be fake, too, because it looks a bit flimsy and off color for a NYPD placard. Or maybe a cop gave copies to his other family members...

I couldn't find the NYC Sheriff's Department on the pulldown for "select agency," but apparently there is one. There's also a little medalion on the placard that says (near as I can make out) "DSA268." Anybody know what that indicates? Anyway, it's authorized by the NYC Deputy Sheriff's Association...

NY Times: New York, True to Mayor’s Promise, Slashes City Parking Permits
News, New York. Observed by lawandorder on Thu, May 01 2008
The Police Department gave up about 20,000 of the city’s coveted parking placards. The Fire Department lost more than 2,000. The mayor’s office gave up 163.
Those were some of the most striking numbers in a long-awaited inventory that the city released on Wednesday, showing that it has reduced the number of free-parking placards distributed to law enforcement agencies and other city departments by nearly a third. The permits give city employees free street parking privileges at their workplace or around the city while on official business.
The cuts are likely to please drivers who see the placards as an easily abused perk that makes the already daunting task of finding a parking spot that much harder, especially in neighborhoods like Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn, where city offices are concentrated.
The Police Department began eliminating placards in March, and most other city agencies are now following suit. When officials finish handing out new placards in the coming days, they will have cut the number of permits to 54,891 from 80,770, according to Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler. The reduction exceeds a pledge by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to trim the number of placards by at least 20 percent.
In September, an additional 63,390 placards used by the Education Department, primarily to allow teachers to park on streets around schools, will also be subject to similar cuts, Mr. Skyler said.
At that point, Mr. Skyler said, a total of 144,160 placards identified in the city inventory will have been reduced to about 105,000, although the number could go even lower.
